Like the phoenix, this is about the power of rising — no matter how many times your spirit is crushed.

Feeling Compassionate

Compassion: when my heart stays open (without abandoning myself)

What compassion is (for me)

  • Compassion is the feeling of warmth and care toward suffering  mine or someone elses.
  • Its not pity. Its not rescuing. Its not pretending things are fine.
  • For me, compassion is: I see the pain, and I dont turn away.

What compassion is trying to do for me

  • Compassion helps me stay humanin a world that can be brutal.
  • It softens the inner violence (self-attack) that trauma can leave behind.
  • It helps me respond with careinstead of reacting from fear, anger, or numbness.

How it shows up for me (body, mind, behaviour)

  • In my body:
    • Soft chest, warm face, gentler breath
    • Less tension in my jaw andshoulders
    • A grounded, steady energy (notfrantic)
  • In my mind:
    • This makes sense. Of coursethis hurts.
    • More nuance (lessblack-and-white
    • Less judgement, moreunderstanding
  • In my behaviour:
    • I speak more gently (to myselfand others)
    • I slow down and listen
    • I offer practical care withouttaking over
    • I can hold boundaries withoutcruelty

What tends to trigger compassion for me (what helps it arrive)

  • Seeing vulnerability (especially when its honest, not manipulative
  • Remembering what it felt liketo be unseen or not believed
  • Quiet moments where my nervoussystem isnt in survival mode
  • Stories, art, objects, andmemories that reconnect me to tenderness
  • Being treated with compassionby someone safe (it teaches my body the feeling)

What makes compassion hard

  • When Im overwhelmed, compassioncan shut down into numbness.
  • When Im triggered, compassioncan flip into anger or defensiveness.
  • If Ive been used, compassioncan feel dangerous  like it will be exploited.

Compassion vsrelated feelings (how I separate them)

  • Empathy: feeling with someone; compassion adds care and steadiness.
  • Pity: looking down; compassion stays equal.
  • Rescuing: taking over; compassion can help without removing responsibility.
  • Forgiveness: not the same thing. I can have compassion without excusing harm.

What I confuse compassion with

  • People-pleasing: giving to avoid conflict isnt compassion.
  • Self-erasure: abandoning myself to care for others isnt compassion.
  • Being nice: compassion can be firm, direct, and protective.

What compassionis telling me I need (needs + boundaries)

  • What I need:
    • Enough safety and capacity tostay open
    • Permission to be kind to myselfwithout earning it
    • Boundaries that stop compassionbecoming self-harm
  • What has to stop / what Iwont do:
    • I wont use compassion as areason to tolerate abuse
    • I wont confuse someones painwith a right to hurt me
    • I wont abandon myself to proveIm a good person

What helps me (inthe moment + longer term)

  • What helps me in the moment (05 minutes):
    1. One sentence: This is hard. Imallowed to be human.
    2. Hand on chest + slow exhale(soften the body first).
    3. Ask: What would care look likeright now  without rescuing?
    4. If its for someone else: Do youwant comfort, help, or space?
  • What helps me the same day(560 minutes):
    1. Do one practical caring action(food, water, rest, a message).
    2. Reduce judgement input(comparison, harsh voices, doom content).
    3. Journal: What am I expectingmyself to survive without support?
    4. If Im depleted: chooseneutrality over cruelty.
  • What helps me longer term:
    • Build a compassion practicethat includes boundaries
    • Learn my fawn patterns socompassion doesnt become compliance
    • Keep a list of safe people(compassion needs safety to stay open)
    • Practice self-talk that istruthful and kind

When compassion becomes too much (gentle note)

  • If Im constantly compassionatebut resentful, thats a sign my boundaries are missing.
  • If compassion feels impossible, thats often a capacity issue  not a moralfailure.

A real moment (optional)

  • Vignette ideas:
    • A time I offered compassion tomyself without minimising what happened.
    • A time I stayed compassionate andsaid no.
